How I handle your answers
Short version: this site only collects what you type into a form. I use it to reply to you and to learn what helps. I don't sell it, I don't track you, and you can ask me to delete it at any time.
Who I am
Understory is run by me, Chernyang Lee. If you have any question about your data, email chernyang.lee@gmail.com.
What is collected
- The phone check-in: your answers, your score, and, only if you give them, your first name, your email, and whether you'd like the Sunday Pause.
- The one-week reset sign-up: your name, email and the answers on that form. If you come from the check-in, a short summary of your result is included only while the "include my check-in summary" box is ticked.
- The Sunday Pause sign-up: your email address.
- The workbook interest list: your email, and, only if you give them, your first name and your answers about price and what would make it worth having. I use the email once, to tell you when the workbook is ready.
- Which link brought you here: if you arrive through a link carrying a short tag (for example from a video description), I keep that tag in your browser for the visit and send it with any form you submit, so I can tell which links work. It isn't stored anywhere else.
- The 2-minute pause on the Try page: nothing. Your answers there never leave the page.
Where it goes
Forms are delivered by Formspree, which emails them to me and keeps a copy in my Formspree account. Formspree is based in the United States. If you book a chat, that goes through Google Calendar's appointment booking.
What stays in your browser
While you go through the check-in and its two steps, your answers are kept in your browser tab so the next step can pick up where you left off. They disappear when you close the tab, and the result page has a button to clear them straight away. The Quiet reading setting on stories is remembered in your browser too. This site sets no tracking cookies.
Counting visits
I count visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics, so I can see which pages are read and roughly where people come from: the page that sent you, your country and your browser type. Cloudflare says it uses no cookies or other storage in your browser for this, and doesn't fingerprint individuals through their IP address or browser details. I can't tell who you are from it, and I don't connect it to anything you type into a form. Cloudflare is based in the United States; its privacy policy says more.
Why I use it
- To reply to you personally, if you left your email.
- To run the one-week reset pilot with the people who signed up.
- To learn what actually helps: I read check-in answers to improve the questions, the scoring and the advice.
I'll only send you the Sunday Pause if you asked for it, and only email you about the reset if you signed up for it.
How long I keep it
For as long as the pilot runs, and then for up to 12 months. After that I delete it, or keep only anonymous totals (for example, "40% started with Notice").
Your choices
Email me at any time to see what I hold about you, correct it, or have it deleted. The check-in is for adults aged 18 and over.
